At first sight I thought: 'Wow! This is beautiful'. I flew above Rotterdam for the first time at night. What I saw was an orange glowing 2D rendering of the city. 'Do I really live here?’ is what followed. This experience changed my perception of the city and I became fascinated by the use of artificial night lighting.
Through the increasing artificial light, our nights become brighter. With more than half of the world’s population now living in cities, 3 out of 4 people in cities have never experienced the wonderment of pristinely dark skies. With my project Nocturne, I turn the lights of our own making into what tends to be natural.
...the empty sky, in which no star or sign is visible, in which one's bearings are lost and orientation is impossible.
